David Spiegelhalter
Professor Sir David Spiegelhalter, OBE, FRS is The Winton Professor for the Public Understanding of Risk, and Chair of the Winton Centre for Risk and Evidence Communication.
He works to improve the way in which risk and statistical evidence are taught and discussed in society. To this end he regularly provides schools, organisation and media outlets with presentations, advice and commentary to assist the comprehension and communication of risk and statistics.
He presented Tails you Win: the Science of Chance and the award-winning Climate Change by Numbers, both documentaries on BBC4.
He has been a guest columnist in The Times, The Guardian, New Scientist and Plus Magazine, and he has made appearances on television documentaries and radio programmes such as The Joy of Stats (BBC 4 TV), To Infinity and Beyond (BBC2 TV), Today, More or Less, You and Yours, The Investigation, Analysis, PM and others.
He was elected FRS in 2005, awarded an OBE in 2006, and knighted in 2014 for services to medical statistics. In 2011 he came 7th in an episode of Winter Wipeout!
The Art of Statistics (Pelican, March 2019), a bestseller, was a joint winner of the Chartered Institute of Information Professionals (CILIP) Knowledge and Management Group Information Printed Information Resource 2020.
Throughout the Covid-19 pandemic, he served as a participant of the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (SAGE).
